I enjoyed reading this, but I wish there were more details about John Sevier’s participation in the American Revolution and his relationship with the American Indians. But as a book that parallels history with the making of history this book deserves 5 stars. I give four stars because had I not read other books about the Jacksonian era, I think this book would be hard to follow. I still have many questions about the ideology that motivated and informed Sevier. Nevertheless I was left with knowledge about the John Sevier of the popular imagination that I wouldn’t have understood had I not read this book.
I bought this for my husband, John Sevier is his 5th great grandfather. He said the book is excellent. It was based on a lot of research & told from that perspective, not just the hero part.

This book gave me some additional perspective on Tennessee's first leader. It was well written and had lots of additional sourcces that I could use with students.
I live a few miles from Plum Grove, so John Sevier was a neighbor of mine a couple of hundred years ago. Very well written and examines this talented and complex man in a very readable fashion. I learned much,
Very good book for providing an overview of John Sevier's life, but it's main credit is the evaluation of sources. Sevier can become a bit of an untouchable superhero in some ways, but this book did a good job reporting him (to the best of the author's knowledge) as he really was. Overall, a good read that I feel supersedes any other source on John Sevier other than original. Any true Tennessean should read this book.
I started reading this book to learn more about one of ancestor, and John Sevier antagonist, John Tipton. I was surprised how little is known about these men, and this time period of Tennessee history. At times the accumulation of the story was a larger aspect than Sevier's life. With so little information available, this is understandable. I also liked the acknowledgment of the more recent efforts to come to grips with the impact Sevier and other Tennesseans had on the Native-American cultures.
Gives the history of one Tennessee's greatest men. However it gives not only the hero's view but also gives the man as he was. Gives a fair and accurate picture, takes the time to quote historians from both the positive and negative perspective and leaves the reader to make the final judgement.
