I enjoy reading Bill O'Neill's trivia books, and this one about California is no exception. Since I have lived in California, quite a lot of the trivia wasn't so new, and California, being such a cornerstone of much of our American culture, is too well known for fresh looks and new information. However, this book does a creditable job at both. Editing of this book seemed rushed which led to grammar, spelling, and sloppy mistakes. I'm not saying the book is hard to read because that would be overstating my comments. The book is interesting to anyone who enjoys trivia, but it needed a final review to correct annoying mistakes. Perhaps by now these corrections have been made in later editions. I didn't notice such glaring errors in the New York trivia book.

I am a native Californian and still learned things about this wonderful state. The only problem I had was when the book is being read to you (an audiobook) they read everything so there is a lot of repeating and I found that very annoying. The narrator Derek Newman has the perfect voice for this kind of book. I was gifted this book with the understanding that I would leave an honest review. I would have done 5 stars except for the over repeating.

I liked The Great Book Of California Kindle Book a lot. It’s a whole lot of information about a whole lot of things concerning the State of California. There was so much that I didn’t know. I really enjoyed finding out all the interesting things. I also have The Great State of Texas and the Great State of New York All of them are very good and very informative. I can’t wait to get the next State Kindle Book. I like a lot of Bill O’Neill’s Kindle Books. Especially the crazy facts ones. So if you want to be entertained and learn something at the same time. Read some of his books. He has a lot to choose from. I really like them and I’m sure you will find that you will like them too.

Mr. O’Neill would have been the type of teacher wished I had in High School. This is the type of knowledge & history kids love.In this book you have a great majority of facts that are taught Air should be in school!I just wish Mr.McNeill would write a trivia book on my home state of Mississippi. Wishful thinking I know but you never know.Great job, can’t wait for his next book!!

Having lived in CA for 26 years before moving to the East Coast to retire, one would think more than enough knowledge about the sunshine state would have accumulated. Nevertheless, Bill O'Neill's book was a real treasure trove of new insights and information. Whether you have lived there or not, if CA interests you, this book will inform and entertain.

As a California native, I had personal expectations on the contents and facts. My needs were met reading this book! Starts off with California historical facts and then go to more present-day facts about California. I enjoy reading Bill's books and this one does not disappoint! Recommended.

I love all the history I get from his books in easy doses. He does it in such a way that I actually remember the trivia.

Even though I have a master’s degree in history, I definitely learned much from this fascinating book!

I'm working as a camp counselor in Wisconsin surrounded by loads of different bushes and plants....wowee this book is just amazing! Very clear pictures and details explaining the different kinds of berries that I see all the time... I've impressed many campers with my "deep insight" all thanks to this book! I am being 100% honest when I say GET THIS BOOK if you are even mildly interested in berry hunting. I have found no books that even come close to how easy-to-read and informative this book has been so far.

This book is a miracle. First of all, it's the first book I've had in a while that BLOWS AWAY the information you can find on the internet. If you are even remotely interested in berries or edible plants, this will be a real eye opener.When I walk through my park now, I see food everywhere. I have found no less than FOUR different edible plants growing wild that no one had ever noticed. This book makes you an expert in no time. Within the first week, my sister and I had successfully foraged wild gooseberries, chokecherries, fire cherries, dewberries and a ton of autumn olives.I will now be hunting down any other books in this series that might be available -- I would love to have the same success with identifying onions and other wild vegetables, or mushrooms.

We were looking for something that would identify the different berries we came across up north at our cabin. I found many that were drawings of the plant and fruit or very poor photos... I read the reviews on this book and thought well it cant be any worse than what I already have and what we had found on the internet. We were very pleased with this book... great photos--a very were small photos, but over all nice photos... loved how it was organized by the color of the berries which made for very quick reference while on the hiking trail... Loved that it not only gave you edible berries but toxic ones as well.. as many times we just wondered what they were, not if you could eat them or not.... loved how this book gave you a snid-bit of what the fruit is best used for. We were very pleased and very impressed with this book... I would recommend it.

Absolutely relevant in Southern Michigan. Contains specific, complete and clear details to allow a positive identification of the plant in question, to include "Compare to" notes to direct you to plant listings that are similar (and possibly toxic). Forage with confidence.

We bought this little guide as we live in a very wooded area and are always out finding new plants with berries or fruits on them and had no idea of what they were. We have already used this guide extensively. It is well written, shows good color photos of the plants with the berries or fruits on them, including many in various seasons if the berries or fruits turn colors later in the growing season. Very handy guide and a good purchase!

The book arrived on time and was in the described condition. It's a very useful field guide and makes fall and winter nature walks more interesting because you can figure out what the fruits are. Great full-page glossy photos (4x6"). Fruits are arranged by color so no botanical knowledge is needed. Each fruit has range map, and description of habitat, leaves, growth pattern, season.

This book is the perfect size for taking with you while hiking or exploring. The pictures are great and info is helpful. My favorite part is that they are organized by color. Super easy to use and kid friendly. Great buy!! (Used in Upper Michigan as well.)

This is just what I was looking for. Lots of clear pictures and good descriptions for the beginner. It is small enough for field use but not so small that a person can't use it easily. Well organized and user friendly.

Stunning Volume ... Beautiful photographs. The way the wealthy lived, is vividly shown in this magnificent book....

Beautiful cover~art but, alas, is a bit of a let~down.The best that could be said about this book is that it is a stroll down memory lane. But, we have taken that same stroll with Horst before, and the tour was delightful, back then in his wonderful book, Horst Interiors. This rehashes some of the same people and places without the freshness and panache. Still, it is notable for a few interiors we get to see more of, and as a collection of period pieces. Overall, not bad but not so great either.

Very pleased with my transaction, and the book is beautiful!

If you know what the photographs really look like this book will let you down. The quality of the images is very poor, which is a surprise from Abrams and from Hamish Bowles - both have much more style than this book shows. Horst deserves better! The only good thing about this book is that it includes many new, never-seen images from these amazing interiors - which is a real treat after all these years.There are a number of recent Horst books which are much superior. There are also a number from the past:-A much better book is Barbara Plumb’s 1993 "Horst Interiors" which is similar to this book but with much better photo reproductions.-Another beautiful, must-have book is the 2007 "Vogue Living: Houses, Garden, People". It was also edited by Mr. Bowles and includes many Horst images.

Wonderful time-capsule of social history when it was grand..........may photos I had never before seen published (Billy Baldwin, for example)It's a must-have for the devotee of design and social history in the second-half of the 20th century.

I eagerly anticipated the arrival of this book, pre-ordering several months in advance. Once I received it, I was very much dissapointed with the print quality and text. I compared it to my copy of "Horst Interiors" by Barbara Plumb and so surprised. The inclusion of several never before seen images was the only saving factor. Horst is too good and deserved a better treatment of his images.

there must be something wrong with me-I thought this was the best decoratingbook I'd laid my hand on for years - I don't understand the whinging reviews thathave been posted hereThe only thing I would have liked would have been to include the original layoutsas wellPerhaps I'm too old -I remember these Vouge articles clearly as a child and thefacsination of Cy Towmbly,Pauline de Rothschild , Desmond Guiness ,Deeda Blairall with their own distinctive look and STYLE and well to me nothing comes nearthem now -nothingLove it
