As my namesake implies, I like complete sets, but I also like craftsmanship on par as well. I purchased the Omnibus (both 1 & 2) because I read about the binding issues with the Absolute Editions and I felt that maybe they'd worked the bugs out of it for the Omnibus versions, which were shorter. I also thought I'd save some money. While the latter was true, the former was NOT.Whatever issues of glue-bonded spines the Absolute Editions carry, the Omnibus have it worse because the page count is so high and on glossy paper, which is heavier than traditional bond. The spine has a thin black sheet of paper to serve as the patch for the glue, and it pops and peels when the book is opened past the fits 100 pages. You can open the book without doing this, but you have to angle the covers at about 30 degrees to keep the tension off the spine. Glue is simply NOT suitable for a 1000+-page book of this weight and I don't know WHAT they were thinking by using it instead of Smythe sewing. If I'm spending $100 or so for it already, I don't mind the extra money for a sturdier brace. I imagine that the book will be falling apart in the next 20 years as the glue decays.I regret my purchase and wish I would have spent the extra coin on the Absolute Editions. There are extras with those and the page count is lower, so the strain on the glue-bound spine is lesser. If you're going to have the same problem either way, you might as well go with the product with a more manageable means.

I'd like to start my review by pointing out I'll be reviewing the edition itself not the story. Sandman is a wonderful work of fiction and widely considered to be one of the greatest graphic novels of all time, if you haven't read it you likely just haven't been able to convince yourself it's worth the $100+ price tag (it is by the way). The point is, you shouldn't be asking yourself whether you should get Sandman, you should be asking yourself should I get this printing or one of the 10 that came before it.Many would consider DC's absolute editions to be the pinnacle of collected editions, for my part I've always found them a bit too cumbersome and more than a bit too pricey. This Sandman Omnibus is much more in line with Marvel Omnibuses (which is to say it's nearly identical), you get a sturdy hardcover filled with approximately 1000 pages of material for roughly the same price tag as a single absolute that holds half the material. The main difference between this and Marvel's omnibuses is that this addition does not come with a dust jacket, but instead the hardcover itself has been turned into a work of art. The binding is stripped in a way that resembles an old textbooks, the cover is stamped with silver and black in just the right amount of flourish, and even the ends of the pages are dipped black (in a manner all too clearly meant to imitate a bible). Presentation wise its the first graphic novel I've purchased since the Dark Tower Omnibus that looks like a genuine work of art without even breaking it open. When you do get around to breaking it open you'll notice the book uses the recolored pages found in the absolute editions (or most recent paperbacks), this might be a drawback for some but having read both editions I found the recoloring to be a plus. The binding, which appears to be a combination of glued and sown, lays flat enough you don't lose chunks of the story even on two page spreads. The one addition I found to be something of an annoyance is the added issue number on the bottom left corner. This doesn't appear on all pages, it's done in a manner similar to adding a page number (just two or three times an issue) but its enough text to be distracting, at the very least they could have just put #1 instead of "The Sandman #1" each time. There's really not much in terms of extras, enough pages in biographies to draw a little of your time but nothing else. That being said this is really, in my mind, the best edition of Sandman released so far. I wouldn't go so far as to turn your absolutes in and make a repurchase since there's really not much new here, but if you're interested in picking Sandman up for the first time or replacing your deteriorating first editions this omnibus offers tremendous value considering the price.**Note as of this review Amazon is not displaying the correct title image for this book. Amazon shows an image of Morpheus on a white background, while the book itself is more of a cherry brown color with text reading Neil Gaiman the Sandman Omnibus Volume I instead of any prominent image.

We ordered Volumes 1 and 2, having never read either before but having heard that the series was really good. Volume 1 arrived in great shape, and stayed that way as my wife and I each read through it. It felt durable, and it would easily lays open. But from the very first time we opened Volume 2, the binding has been creaking and cracking, and feels fragile. Unfortunately, the return window had ended by the time we finished Volume 1 and discovered the problems with Volume 2.I'm not even going to attempt to review the story, since that is so subjective, but, if you are someone who likes to curl up in bed with a book, this publication is a little too large and too heavy for that... We did compare our copy to a friend's publication that had the first ten comics, and this publication has crisper images and brighter colors, which make it both beautiful and easier to absorb.(We reviewed Volume I at five stars and Volume 2 at three stars for the durability issues)

Volume 1 contains issues 1-37 and the sandman special #1. It is a huge leather bound book that weighs about as much as a baby. This omnibus is featured at a discounted price on Amazon even though it seems really expensive once you've looked around youll see this is actually a really good price for a near complete leather bound collection of Sandman.

I've always been a fan of Gaiman, and of the Sandman series. I was so excited when the Omnibus arrived! It's a beautiful tome, very attractive with a vintage look to it. It's quite heavy, so you can't really read it standing up (unless you're trying to combine your reading and exercise routine). I don't mind that at all - on the contrary, I feel it adds to the intensity of the experience. The tome makes me feel like Destiny of the endless reading from my book of fates.

Given who Sandel is and his previous body of work, I bought this book expecting a deeper exploration about the morality of economics and the limits of its underlying utilitarian framework (and its implicit mathematical ordering eg Pareto optimality and the like). Instead, Sandel generally picks interesting - but extreme - cases such as paying drug addicts to undergo sterilization to make two narrow points about markets corrupting that which is traded or making an assumption that willingness to pay can be divorced from ability to pay. In addition, he doesn’t do much to deepen his analysis of these two points - he merely points out a myriad of situations where they are present. Consequently, while his argument is valid and interesting, a lack of breadth and depth made this purchase less satisfying than it could have been.

Having seen Michael Sandel on TV and having found his intellectual clarity and gifts breath taking I simply had to read something he had written. This book is no disappointment. His writing on the subject of economic views on life is brilliant. Clear, easy to follow and profoundly challenging as he discusses the awful reality of the commodification of much of life in the western world . His chapter on gifts and their meaning alone is enough to recommend this book as a great read for anyone who has some issues with the way the world in the west is heading. He argues for a human side to our deliberations. The need for compassion rather than an economic explanation for everything.

Michael Sandel is unsurpassed in writing books that are delightfully accessible while being intellectually rigorous. What Money Can't Buy lacks the academic references to classical thinkers that were in his book Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do, which is a shame, but it is still one of the most thought-provoking books I have read in a long time.Sandel's subject is money, specifically how monetary incentives and disincentives are being used today in a wide array of realms where money was not a factor in the past. Sandel is a philosopher, not an economist or political scientist, and so he asks, "What does this mean? And why should I care?" As he says in the introduction, "to decide what money should--- and should not ---be able to buy, we have to decide what values should govern the various domains of social and civic life. How to think this through is the subject of this book."To explore the implications of the expansion of the role of markets in our lives, What Money Can't Buy considers two primary aspects: fairness and corruption. The first aspect, fairness, is the more obvious: a wealthier individual will not be affected by a societal incentive/disincentive as much as a poor one. Granted, true, but I do not need a Harvard professor to tell me so. The second aspect is the more interesting: does the use of monetary factors corrupt our sense of values? Are there basic human rights and feelings that should be immune from market manipulation? An interesting example is that of a Swiss town that was a potential site for a nuclear waste dump. The town was a very good site for such a facility, and 51% of the town residents said they would accept it. They were then asked if they would accept the dump if authorities offered to pay an annual inducement of over $8000 per person. The rate of acceptance fell from 51% to 25%. Apparently the residents did not like having the issue turned from one of civic altruism into a pecuniary matter. People do believe that there are issues in which money should not play a role. The book's prolific examples range from Bruce Springsteen concert tickets to paying for an upgraded prison cell (!) to cap-and-trade. I especially loved the Springsteen example. People were scalping tickets to a Springsteen concert in New Jersey; you may or may not feel this is unethical. However, if you are also told that Springsteen deliberately kept ticket prices low because he is from NJ and wanted ordinary people to be able to come, AND this cost him an estimated $4 million in ticket revenue, does this affect your opinion?Although I thought Sandel's examples were well-chosen, thought-provoking, and enjoyable, I wish the actual discussion of the philosophical implications of the lessons to be learned had been more extensive. He made ME think, but I'd like to have heard more about what HE thinks. The book was fairly short and over too soon.

Sandel's book provides a key insight into the shift and influence of the Neo-Liberal (total faith in the free market) trend in economics. In his intro he provides a powerful statement into this shift. He states that "we" may be moving from a society that has a market-driven economy to a free-market society. The distinction is very important because the shift means that many aspects of our society (procreation, pollution, education, etc.) that are value-laden are now treated as commodities like soap, cars and pork-bellies.Sandel offers no solutions, but provides key arguments on both sides showing what a slippery slope this trend is. His analysis is excellent in showing the issue underlying each argument, and in doing so, the reader can cut through the brambles of rhetoric and view the issue in clearer terms. His writing is clear and, as mentioned above, he provides no answers, but rather forces the reader to come to their own position given all the "facts." This is a must read for people to begin to think about important moral decisions in this society and not be swayed by loud-mouthed media "pundits."

Sandel has all the credentials that make for a fine commentary on modern American commercial society. His deep sense of what constitutes justice informs his many examples in the book of how businesses and corporations have stolen the public arena for their advertisements. He clearly describes how this creeping phenomenon has taken over the commons and usurped public spaces for their capitalistic messages. According to dispassionate marketing theories, these intrusions make sense, in the context of maximizing efficiency and promoting the common good. Sandel points out, however, that the cost is a loss of fairness and a warped idea of what community should be.

The product I received is what I expected. I didn't have any issues similar to others, as my map was not creased. However, my map edges are frayed or splitting. It appears to be new. If I was looking for a map to put in a frame, this one was not it, but since I want to use it, it will work well. When I read the map was laminated, I thought it would have a thick plastic coating. The laminated part is a very sheer coating that is only on the top. If you get it near water, I expect it will absorb the water very quickly, but it can be kept pretty clean with a little effort. It will meet my needs and desires completely, but maybe not others.

Map is the size as described. Quality feels good. However it is a laminated map that arrived with creases. Poor packaging....I just lowered the rating to one star. I was unable make the map flat. Shipping Completly ruined it.

This National Geographic laminated map of China is perfect for my intended use. It arrived rolled in its original shrink wrap, well padded in a box which was significantly larger than the roll. Adding another small item to my order allowed me free shipping, making it a great deal even when paying the list price. The map itself is the excellent quality expected of National Geographic products, with sturdy lamination. While I do not recommend the laminated version for travel use due to obvious folding issues, it is excellent for planning purposes or wall hanging.

First, I should point out that while I sympathize with the disappointment of the previous reviewer, his review does NOT describe THIS map.I'm not sure if he wrote his review under the wrong product heading or what, but this is the same as all other National Geographic wall maps, with the full image on one side and blank white space on the other. My only minor gripe with all of the NatGeo maps is that I would prefer the paper stock be a little heavier/thicker, but for the price, I really can't complain. All in all, a very nice, detailed map with a beautifully rendered image.

I would have preferred a fold up map. Didn't realize that it was in a tube----however as long as I am writing this map came with another purchase in the same box and I thought that it was very poorly and sloppily packaged. No damage so I have no complaint other then to inform you that you may want to check on your packaging department.

i have undertaken an extensive review of chinese history and a map is essential to this study. it is also helpful to examinethe pinyin transcriptional methods. the map is 1:8,000,000 scale, but contains stunning detail of towns and geographicfeatures. i keep it handy to examine local events in the history as i come across them, and, with the use of coordinates,i find locations easily on this map. it serves as a good overview as more detail would require a smaller scale.

In both English and Chinese, easy to read and navigate for the home traveler. We dry-mounted it on foam core and mounted it to the wall. We use color coded flag pins to indicate each family travels in China. We go often w/home in Guangzhou. Excellent quality that rivals the finest maps I've ever seen in Europe and Asia. Seller shipped them quickly in quality protective packaging.TNX!

Much too small for a country as large as China. This needs to be at least 50% larger and preferably 100% larger. At this size the city names are almost overrunning each other and it's difficult to see much map detail other than the names.
