This is an interesting little book that provides a unified algorithmic presentation for more than two dozen calendars of current and historical interest. The book gives precise descriptions of each calendar and makes accurate calendar algorithms available for computer programmers. The complete workings of each calendar are described in verbage and then mathematically. Working computer programs are included in an appendix and on the accompanying CD.The one thing I didn't care for was the choice of Lisp as the implementation language in appendix B. However, this isn't too big of a problem since equivalent Java programs are on the book's website along with the Lisp implementations. Also, since the mathematical equations of conversion are clearly given, you can choose your own implementation language with few problems. The following is the table of contents:1. If you need to calculate a leap month start in a traditional Korean calendar this is a book for you. As far as I have found, this is the only source of such information, covering majority of world calendars.

In the course of building a 10,000 year clock I needed to know a lot of obscure details about various calendar systems. Calendrical Calculations not only answered all my questions, but it also introduced me to a lot of interesting information that I never would have thought to ask about. It is one of those rare books that is both an authoritative reference source and a fun read.

An excellent book on the history and workings of various calendars. But don’t use the source code! The licensing agreement is a trap. Use the code in GNU Emacs from the Free Software Foundation distributed under the General Public License. It does everything the authors code does (except for two obscure calendars) and it's free and always will be.

I am amazed by the clarity and "simplicity" of the text in the book.Calendars are not simple at all, but the approach taken by the authors makes the algorithms involved very accessible. I also appreciated the decision to focus on clarity rather then performance.

This book contains conversion routines for many of the world calendars (ancient and modern). It also contains some hisorical background. More especially, it contains excellent algorithms for the astronomical calculations needed to calculate Moon and Equinox positions needed for calendars that are Lunar or Equinox related (such as the Chinese and Original French Revolutionary Calendar). The explanation of the algorithms and descriptions of the exact details of calculation of calendars is extremely clear and well researched.Another book along the same lines is the Standard C Date/Time Library by Lance Latham which is much thicker, covers more calendars and contains more historical information of calendars origin - but lacks the astronomical calculations contained in this book by Dershowitz and Reingold.Reviewed by Ira J. I have been a solo traveler for 10 years. I was hoping for some insights when I bought this book. The pages are filled with lots of pictures and graphics but very few words. This is a "feel good" book about traveling solo. I have read most of the information contained in this book on travel websites. It's intended audience are people under 35yo with a limited budget.I would return it but feel it is ethically wrong to return a book after skimming through it. Instead, I'll gift it for Christmas. Don't waste your money on this.

Great manual so far for a first timer traveler guide to Europe or anywhere for that matter

My friend is going to Ireland on a solo trip this year and so I thought this would make a nice birthday gift. When she opened it, she immediately started flipping through and even said it got her excited for the trip since she was starting to get a bit nervous. Seems like a nice book for anyone considering a trip for themselves.

Interesting content but not enough of it. Format was not functional for e-reading. In fact it was very tedious and frustrating.Geared mostly towards the young traveler.

I purchased this book after failing horribly at a software developer interview. I have been a developer for 4 years but as a self taught developer I lacked some of the CS fundamentals. This book has taught me a lot about how to solve many CS problems by using data structures. I have not finished the book yet but I already feel pretty confident with the new things I have learned.

When you are able to determine what the author is saying, you'll discover its wrong. There are so many errors in this book, I am unsure why this book is in its 3rd Edition. I paid about 50.00 bucks for this book and I feel completely ripped off. Also, you will not find any refuge in "Hands-on Data Structures and Algorithms with Javascript by Kashyap Mukkamala" as the case is the same.

So many errors... I questioned every line. Some errors are mindblowing. Here is my favorite: "...This resulted in a new language standard, which we know as ECMAScript. JavaScript is an implementation of this specification (the most popular), which is known as ActionScript." (ActionScript is in bold!).Is this book about ActionScript? What is known as ActionScript? JavaScript? ECMAScript? Since when???Quit without finishing chapter 1 simply because I don't trust the information it provides. It's a pity since I don't see enough books on this topic.

I found this book to be an excellent introduction to radiometric dating methods. The author not only presents good explanations for how the methods were developed and how they are used but also discusses the scientists involved. This provides the reader with a lot of "color" commentary that keeps a rather dry subject interesting. What comes across repeatedly is the creativity and tenacity of the researchers as they hypothesize, create then refine the various techniques.

Almost everyone has heard of radiocarbon dating, but it's applicable only for the last 50-thousand years or so. It's not common knowledge that much greater intervals of time can now be dated accurately. Doug Macdougall's Nature's Clocks offers a full and highly readable account of how scientists can date materials that formed many billions years ago. I found the book hard to put down.Many students in earth science classes have been exposed to the geological Eras and Periods and these are properly and succinctly covered in the book. But that record is based on fossil evidence that extends only about 600 million years back, almost one-millionth of the earth's age. What happened before, and when?Early consideration of the earth's age was based on biblical inferences and many people still subscribe to a faith based view. But objective treatments of earth's history began in the eighteenth century with James Hutton's Theory of the Earth, with Proofs and Illustrations. Hutton evaluated geological evidence but he and later geologists lacked objective measures of time. It was late nineteenth and early twentieth century advances in chemical and physical knowledge of heavy metals and radioactive decay that established the basis for modern techniques of determining ages of formation. Key players are identified in the development of these fantastically sensitive methods and the principles underlying each are explained. The relevance of dating materials to understanding the evolutionary and geological history of man is reviewedThere are no serious omissions in Macdougall's treatment; even the mathematical basis of measuring time via radioactive decay is simply and well explained although understanding the maths is unnecessary to enjoy and understand the book. Creationists take note: Nature's Clocks offers irrefutable evidence in support of stellar and biological evolution because the underlying phenomena can be measured and dated.

The hikers don't know what to make of this situation. When the find is described and broadcast paleontologists descend on the site and discover an ancient human frozen into the ice, extremely well preserved, but now partially exposed to the elements. Questions soon arise: Who was this individual? How did s/he become frozen in the ice? When did s/he die? The stage is now set for MacDougall to explain how scientists determine the ages of things.MacDougall does a masterful job of presenting scientifically complex ideas in clear, concise, and extremely readable prose. Not only that, but he pulls it off in a way that just about anyone can follow along and make sense of what there is to know about radiometric and other methods of determing the absolute ages of things.I particularly enjoyed the historical context MacDougall provides when he introduces a new topic or method. For example, he starts by describing the discovery of radioactivity and progresses through early relatively inexact dating methods to the much more reliable and precise modern methods used today. And, since this book was publishd in 2008 he is able to include even cutting-edge methods.The book is of particular interest to me since I teach a college-level course in the nature of science, and course topics include the origin and age of the universe, the origin and age of the earth, and the evolutionary origins of the human body. While I already had a general understanding of radiometric dating, this book opened my eyes to the simplicity and complexity of methods used in the past and today to the work it takes to determine the ages of things.If you have ever wondered how scientists concluded that the earth is about 4.5 billion years old, or how they determine the ages of rocks, fossils, or pretty much anything else, then this book is for you.MacDougall amazingly manages to address this topic in a comfortable 238 pp. of text, followed by some appendicies, and a glossary of terms, just in case you need to check something out.This is a five-star read all the way! As soon as I finished I was sending out emails to colleagues telling them of my lucky find!Thanks Doug! You've done a brilliant job!

This book gives a good account of the development of radiometric dating and the many uses for it. By the way, don't be swayed by reviewers that can't even write out God (G-d) as somebody that is not religious and thinks the book omits .... something. What are omitted are the "assumption arguments" of the religious apologists. The book actually did clarify inaccuracies, assumptions and corrective methods.

An excellent description of the methods used to measure the time intervals of earth's history. It is written for the person who does not have a background in earth science by an author is has an excellent background and a great ability to put complicated science into terms any one can understand and does so with a pleasant sense of humor.

This is a book that changed my life. I was given a copy when I was 15 and had a lot going on, at the time I didn't realize what a gem I have been handed. Years later I finally read the book and it changed the way I view everything. I cannot tell you how many times I've referenced this book in papers I've written while working on my Master's. This book has helped me through depression and changing the way I think to make my life better and to accomplish my goals. I have given a copy of this book too many people in my life because I want to spread what I gained from it to others. If you only read one book as an adult it should be this one. Obviously does not a happy cheery go lucky story, but it is one everyone should hear about human resiliency and finding the reason why people continue on even in the darkest of times. Viktor Frankl is my favorite nonfiction writer and a huge inspiration to me.

Viktor Frankl's book essentially includes two works: his story from Nazi concentration camp and his philosophy he dubbed "Logotherapy". His story of life in concentration camp speaks for itself. Logotherapy, on the other hand, is an interesting school of thought. Logotherapy in this book is not deeply investigated but if you want more you can try Frankl's other book 'The Will to Meaning'. In a nutshell, Frankl said that it is our duty to find meaning in life. The meaning can change from moment to moment so it need not necessarily be a grand or life-long meaning. Just right now, what can do you? He encourages others to identify things they can do, such as create something (produce something that was not present before you made it), take something (absorb something from others), and finally adjust your attitude. The adjustment of your attitude is the last thing you have control over once everything else has been taken from you, according to Frankl.

There's a good reason this little book has stayed in print since the end of WWII. It's a gem once you get past the dire observations in the concentration camp . I skipped the whole concentration camp section the first time and went back to read a few pages at a sitting until I could detach from the horrors and appreciate Frankl's uncanny ability to endure such atrocities and use them in the e to render his insights utterly profound. Doesn't get any better than this IMHO. A good way to spend a quiet week end.

I had been meaning for several years to read this seminal work but had two reservations in doing so: first, with images of the Holocaust already seared in my mind from films and documentaries, I was hesitant to read what I assumed would be even more graphic descriptions of life in a concentration camp; second, even accepting that Frankl's first-person narrative of life in the camps is important both in historical and moral terms, I had planned to read Part I and dispense with the section describing Logotherapy, believing it would be too inaccessible to the lay person.I was absolutely wrong on both counts.As one trained in probing the psyche, it is understandable that Frankl's account of Auschwitz and Dachau would focus on prisoners' mindsets and reactions to the extreme multiple pressures that they faced. It was surprising, however, to see the degree to which he refrained from employing more vivid descriptions of the state of human anatomy, rank brutality, personal weakness, etc. This is especially interesting given the fact that Frankl set down his thoughts not in hindsight, but initially while still impounded. By emphasizing the actions and reactions of the camps' internees while describing the despicable acts of their captors in the most basic terms, Frankl actually produces an even more gripping and insightful narrative.Having completed Part I, I moved immediately to Part II on Logotherapy, anxious to see how Frankl would construct a new framework of professional analysis based on the numbing, near-shattering environment that he had survived. Eventually I found that I had been informally using some aspects of Logotherapy in reviewing the course of my own life from time to time and that his three-part framework for living - discerning meaning in productivity, meaning in relations with others and striving for a consistent sense of dignity when experiencing unavoidable suffering - resonated loudly in me. Frankl connects the dots between his camp experiences and observations and the development and implementation of Logotherapy quite well, with very limited jargon, and with a stark conclusion.I hesitated before embracing this work. Don't.

First of all, this book is definitely worth reading, the first part where the author talks about his experience in the concentration camps - how any of our small issues are nothing compared to what has already happened in this world and how mankind has been able to overcome it all.The second part where he talks about logotherapy - gets our brains to work. The idea behind this book is that, when man has lost everything, there is still something they can pursue in their mind, there is still something which he they can look forward to.Coming from his own experience in the concentration camps, there was something he was looking for, even when he had lost everything in life and there was nothing else to look forward other than to be gassed. He also motivated his comrades to look for something - to search for a meaning in life and to isolate their minds from the external happenings.As a general read, it is worth reading, it gets us thinking in new lines.But is it applicable to give new hope to people ? Can it motivate a terminally ill cancer patient to look for something ?What would have Lance Armstrong have to say about logotherapy ? I think Lance would have acknowledged it - having recovered from cancer to become a champion again. Again it is all about finding new meaning/new hopes to continue and sustain life, even in the brink of hopelessness.

Very repetitive. It was used as a textbook but we could barely use it in class because the chapters were all over the place and in no particular order. Kinda seemed like it could be summed up in one, pretty short facebook article. Definitely a 4/10 waste of time, only made better by how short it seems.

It seems like the author was forced to meet a certain word count because it's extremely repetitive. It's a little all over the place.

This is required reading for a college Global Media course. It is really well written and the author is easy to follow. He is definitely knowledgeable and knows how to write in a way to keep his audience interested. I am actually reading ahead because I am enjoying the book so much.

This was a required book for my Global Media class and I actually really loved it! Its very easy to read and has good information that is relevant in today's media.

The second edition of Globalization & Media is an outstanding, readable, and interesting text for international communications courses. Last spring I looked for a new text for my university Global Media Systems course. So many texts in the field are hundreds of pages, uninteresting, and unorganized. Lule's text was a big hit---for the professor and the students. Within the manageable 191 pages, Lule focuses on the importance of media's role in political globalization, cultural globalization, and economic globalization. Have media and globalization produced the "Global Village" envisioned by Marshal McLuhan or the "Global Village of Babel," as predicted by Lewis Mumford? The question makes for interesting class discussions.

As I read this book to my daughter, I felt very uncomfortable with the focus of the book. It was all about a princess treasuring her Kiss and wanting to give the Kiss to a person worthy of the kiss. This paints an incomplete picture of marriage and relationships. Marriage is not only about finding the right person but BEING the right person. The princess in the book is very one dimensional and seems to have nothing to offer the boy but her status and her kiss. I want my daughter to know that a marriage is strong when both people are strong in character and faith. Ironically, the author's portrayal of the suitors are similarly one dimensional: one has nothing to offer but romance, another has nothing to offer but strength, etc. And the poor farmer she chooses to be her husband seems to have nothing going for him except that he's nice and has HIS kiss to give her. I don't want my daughter thinking that the ONLY treasure she can give her husband is her kiss or that the only thing she should look for in a husband is that kiss... as if being of the same faith, having similar life goals, being able to hold down a job, being able to handle conflict in a healthy way, etc are not important. I feel that there is so much to have to explain because this book can lead a young person to have an incomplete picture of what makes a good relationship.But more importantly, I wouldn't want my child to lose hope if she ever gave that kiss to someone besides her husband or dismiss someone just because he didn't have his kiss to give her. God's gift isn't purity; it's hope and salvation. As important as purity is, for a Christian book, there was not even a mention about God and faith. Purity should be our response to our love for a holy God. This book simplifies purity, even idolizes it, to the detriment of the gospel.And I will also mention that after I read this book to my 4-year-old, her only response was "Ewww!"

loved this book when i found it years ago. i have been introducing it to my 4 and 5 year old this year. we have talked about the glowing light and how it is called a kiss but doesnt look like one. it was a fun way to talk about their bodies and how they are special and unique and precious. I used it as a body safety talk by likening the mom and dad keeping the kiss safe with 'your body is yours and no one is to look or touch it accept in certain times and places until your big enough to do it yourself." also talking about why they have to keep their clothes on and can't answer the door naked. hehe. no the book doesn't address these, it just shows a princess waiting for a guy. and waiting. and waiting. and waiting.but its pretty. and there are other books that will address living your life and not waiting around for a man, we read those too.don't use this as a purity book if your not willing to actually address whatever purity your trying to convey. i know to many people who think they could get pregnant from a kiss and this might make that one aspect of sexuality to important if your not willing to talk, but it can be a great talking book.. if your willing. (also if you look carefully you will find one old man on almost every page with the suiters who seems to be pointing out wisdom about that suitor love that)

I don't have any children yet but I collect beautiful children's books. This book has an amazing message about staying pure and waiting. I myself am waiting for the Lord to bring the right man into my life so this book means a lot. When I have children one day this is a book I would love to read to them. Any way the pictures are lovely and the way Jennie Bishop weaves the story is wonderful.

My daughter is 7 years old. She does not understand yet what this story really represents but this is her favorite story. Every little girl should be introduced to the idea and concept of purity. Even today's cartoons are filled with little girls longing for the attention of a boy and that first kiss. Give your daughter the gift of self worth and the knowledge that GOD values her above all else.

My Mum read this to me when I was growing up and I loved it! It's such a beautiful, imaginative and innocent depiction of the gift of a kiss and the value of saving these things for your spouse. I'm gifting this book to my flower girls and am excited for the moments that they'll spend reading this with their own mother. Highly, highly recommend this book to anyone!

With all the media out there that is available to our children (not all of it good for them) it's nice to know that there are some godly Christian authors who will take a strong and positive stand for something God values highly...purity prior to marriage. The illustrations are artistically beautiful as well. The Princess and the Kiss is a delightful and refreshing story of a princess who takes the advice of her parents, the king and queen, treasures her gift from God, the kiss, and then wisely decides upon the man to marry based upon his humble testimony. Prior to her ultimate decision and with the blessing of her parents, she has to carefully weed out other suitors who come to call. These suitors/princes offer her strength/protection, romance and riches. She turns them all away as she discerns that these things will not stand the test of time. She chooses her husband, a common and kind man, who has saved his special kiss just for her who also learns that she has done the same thing. This testimony serves as a confirmation that indeed he is the correct choice whom God sent to her. How divine and lovely! Thank you Amazon for making this book available and affordable.
