This book should be read along with Ericsson's Peak and Duckworth's Grit. They both support the science that talent has been away for some to explain away and dismiss the enormous amount of time and effort (now known as deliberate practice and purposeful practice) that individuals devote to being great at somethings. It really is an insult to the top tennis players that they must have talent when in actuality they sacrifice a lot in their lives that we choose to do--like they get up at 4am to practice while others are still asleep. Know what what want and know what you believe is the authors last idea. If we believe that hard work and deliberate practice are the starting point and tools to be great at something then this books removes the excuses and asks, "So now what's your excuse for not working hard to be the best?" Be careful reading this book and consider yourself warned. You may actually become great at the "what" in life that you've always dreamed about. Great dreams and dreams of being great at something really can become a reality!!

I read this book several months ago, and have had time to digest it's message, which is essentially what the title says. I agree with it on many fronts that dedicated hard work leads to excellence. However, I do believe that "talent" does exist, and cannot be duplicated simply with hard work. For example, my singing voice is awful. If I dedicated my whole life to singing, it might go from awful to tolerable, or perhaps a bit better, but I'd always be the nitwit on the X Factor who goes on and the judges make a face like they just drank a shot of lemon juice while I'm crooning away. And likewise, I ran spring track in high school, and one year in college. And I've more or less jogged 2-3 times a week for a few miles at 10 min pace since (I'm now 34). However, when I lace up my shoes at a local 5K, I can still crank out 5:45ish miles and soundly beat many people who have cumulatively trained much harder for much longer than I have,even if I haven't run a sub 6 min mile in over a year. Not that I am the best in the world, because I'm not, but that is talent. That is something that most people cannot do if their lives were dedicated to it.Let's face it that dedicated hard work will produce top results. I agree with that. However, if you take two people, one with a natural aptitude towards something, and another without that aptitude, if both people put in the same exact dedicated hard work, the one with the natural aptitude will always do better. It's just a fact.So my bottom line review of the book is that it will make you think, and realize that dedicated hard work is what all people do who excel in a particular endeavor. However, it's not fair or accurate to say that we can all be great at anything other than the obvious would preclude us from (a 6'10" person trying to be a gymnast, or a 4'10" person trying to be in the NBA). I think a better title for the book would be "Talent Will Only Get You So Far".Yet, with that said, it is a book worth reading, as it will make you realize that people who are good at something are good because they have paid dues beyond what the average person is inclined to do.

In this book, Geoff Colvin explores controversies about talent -- including the idea it may not exist.And something called "deliberate practice" may be more significant. Deliberate practice isn't mindless repetition. It's hard. It hurts. And the more you do it, the closer you move to greatness.Where Did The Idea of Innate Talent Originate?Colvin traces it to Francis Galton, 19th century English aristocrat and college dropout. Galton and his peers believed that people came into the world with pretty much the same capabilities, which they developed (or not) throughout their lives. This concept arose from the Age of Enlightenment and the French Revolution -- liberté, égalité, fraternité and all that.Then Galton's cousin Charles Darwin published On The Origin Of Species. It inspired Galton to change his tune and write a book called Hereditary Genius, which influenced the next several generations.Does Talent Even Exist?Scientists haven't yet discovered what all our 20,000-plus genes do. They've yet to identify specific genes that govern particular talents.What About Mozart?Mozart wrote music at age 5, gave public performances at age 8, and composed some of the world's most beautiful symphonies before his death at age 35. Yet a close look at Mozart's background reveals:His father, Leopold, was an expert music teacher who published a violin textbook the year Mozart was born.Leopold systematically instructed Mozart from at least age 3 (probably sooner).Mozart's first four piano concertos, composed at age 11, contained no original music. He cobbled them together from other composers' works.Mozart composed his first original masterpiece, the Piano Concerto No. 9, at age 21. That's a remarkable achievement, but by then he'd gone through eighteen years of intense, expert training.Colvin concludes that years of deliberate practice can actually change the body and the brain, which is why world-class performers are different from the rest of us. But they didn't start that way, which is great news for late bloomers like me! It's never too late to follow a passion, especially if "world-class" is not your goal. This book is accessible and tightly written. I highly recommend it if the subject even vaguely interests you.

Good book for agents that want to "explode" their business but not very helpful for those of us that just want to be an agent and do a good job. Most of the information was how to add employees to your business model. The better book for a realtor is "The seven levels of communication" by Michael J.Mayer; great hands on learning advise!!!!

This book sat on my bookshelf for three months before I even cracked the cover. I wish I opened it sooner. This is a great guide to becoming a successful agent and building a lasting business. The models within are scalable, so if you prefer to set more modest goals and then progress to a million, this book will get you there. This book helps me plan my activities to benefit me now, while being a road map to get my business where I want it to be in the future.

I have yet to obtain my real estate license but purchased this book to give me insight before I get started. This book can be of huge value for any entrepreneur regardless of industry. I am certain my future success will be propelled from the knowledge and wisdom in Gary Keller's book.

As a brand new agent, I read this book hoping to get tips and tricks of the trade. While I did get some great advice for is to grow my business I was hoping to get a few more basic starting out instructions.

I would suggest every new agent read this book.

As a vitamin D and health advocate, I ordered a copy of "Multiple Sclerosis and (lots of) Vitamin D" and devoured it upon delivery today. Author Ana Claudia Domene walks the reader through her journey with multiple sclerosis including the diagnosis, conventional treatment, and her success taking large doses (think 60,000 iu a day) of vitamin D as part of the Coimbra Protocol. Ms. Domene carefully explains the world-renown treatment plan by Brasilian neurologist Cicero Galli Coimbra, MD, PhD that includes daily vitamin D doses of up to 200,000 iu! In short, her words of success and knowledge serve as an inspiration for anyone who is touched by the potentially ravaging autoimmune disease called multiple sclerosis.

Excellent book by a patient.There are over 200 articles on MS and Vitamin D at VitaminDWikiMy comments on this excellent protocolSome doctors just prescribe 2,000 IU of vitamin D to reduce MS symptoms.Dr. Coimbra gives 40,000 to 200,000 daily to CURE MS (actually eliminate all symptoms, but must continue taking vitamin D for life)He has claimed that the very high dose Vitamin D should work with most/all auto-immune diseases. I have wondered, for 4+ years now, if very high dose Vitamin D will also work for many other diseases.Not just work, but perhaps fully treat if the disease has not progressed too far. I have wondered how many people who are able to achieve 40-60 nanograms of vitamin D in their blood are still not able to get a good level in their cells due to gene problems. That is, their vitamin D levels test as being good, but their cells are not getting the benefit.I wonder how much his success rate (80%?) would be improved if he were to add Omega-3 and Magnesium to his protocol

The book I needed. Includes well desciribed experience of dr Coimbra patients suffering from autoimmunological desieses (mostly MS) with high doses Vitamin D treatment. The book inludes recent information about the institutions (including webpage adresses) leading this kind of therapy, about internet forums of patients. I found it usefull in the procees of decisionmaking regarding to commence the treatment. Realistic, but giving lots of hope.

Great book, seriously thinking about buying a bunch of copies and putting then in the lobbies of nuerologist' officeso, to get those folks some real help

I can't stress this enough: It's a groundbreaking and almost miraculous treatment. Based on thousands of scientific articles. It works. Better than DMDs. It's simple. No collateral effects other than having to keep an eye on the calcium levels and adhering to a low calcium diet. It's safe. No reason to not give it a shot.I personally know dozens of patient that not only stopped MS progression, but even got better from previous lesions. Both clinically and in the MRIs. There are even support Facebook groups (search for Coimbra Protocol) where you can interact with other patients and share the results and progresses. Yes, it's amazing.

This author does a good job relating her experiences, as well as the scientific research, which explains the physiological processes of the immune system. She lists many references, as well as several personal stories of fellow patients. My sister has MS and the treatment withVitamin D works. She doesn't use interferon anymore and after 2 years without any flare from the disease. Fascinating book. Not only about the agricultural empire the Boswells built starting in the early 1920s, but the backgrounds and working conditions of those attracted to work in the Central Valley (Oakies both black and white in addition to Mexicans), how towns like Corcoran were established (and later destroyed), all made very real by the endless interviews conducted by the authors. The amount of background research required to produce this book is mind boggling, yet the pieces are seamlessly put together - the book moves right along, I found to be a real page-turner, and has no axe to grind, it isn't a polemic against "big agriculture" as the good and the bad of this family farming operation are both presented. The cast of characters is wide, and at times pretty weird, all making for a good read. The final ingredient is California and federal water policy, a story unto itself with battle lines changing over a century. I found this story of particular interest as I worked at the Boston Ranch - Boswell's 23,000 cotton operation in the Valley - in 1958 when I was 16. All I can remember is it was really, really big, even though it was a fraction of the 150,000 acres the family eventually controlled. Also remember the tarpaper shacks on the edge of the property where the pickers lived - a disturbing sight. How all the part of this empire, including the fate of its employees, came together and grew is a most interesting story - and told with great style and verve by the authors. A real classic about a small spot on the planet.

This particular chapter details the rise of a farming empire in California's Central Valley. Coming from Greene County Georgia, the Boswell family built this empire largely on the backs of migrant labor and water--lots and lots of water. One other point: on the way to becoming one of the largest landowners in California, the Boswell's forever reshaped the landscape and drained Tulare Lake.Prior to settlement, the Central Valley's river floodplain system nourished some 1.4 million acres of tule marshes and wooded wetlands. The draining of vast sweeps of wetlands along with the damming and channeling of four major rivers has altered the landscape in both a manner and at a scale that is, quite literally, unprecedented. If you wanted to focus on a single family/farming empire that played the biggest role in this alternation, then you could do no better than The King of California.Tulare Lake lies near the southern end of California's Central Valley. The proximity of such a huge, seasonal lake to a large farming operation was a mixed blessing. During dry years, as the shoreline contracted, the land could be transformed to grow grain or row crops. In wet years, however, as the Sierra Nevada snow pack melted, the runoff of the Kings, Kaweah, Tule, and Kern Rivers filled this basin. The big runoff produced high flows into July and August, resulting in a vast and expanding lake shore. The flooded farmland resulted in less crops, less money... J.G. Boswell was determined to rein these waters in and convinced the Federal Government to help.In an errant attempt to encourage small family farms, loopholes in the reclamation laws brought most of the land in the Central Valley under the control of a handful of private landowners. The Californian land barons went by the names of Henry Miller, J. G. Boswell, and "Cockeye" Salyer. The land around Tulare Lake eventually got folded into Boswell farming empire. In the final analysis, the Boswell's got the land, the water rights, and handed the tax-payers the bill for the construction of Pine Flat Dam on the Kings River.I feel a bit of guilt when I throw on a mass produced cotton T-shirt (e.g., I can buy a three-pack for under ten dollars). Because this cheap cotton underwear really isn't that cheap. Mass produced cotton uses a lot of water. In fact, to grow a single T-shirt takes 257 gallons of water. If you own a piece of cotton underwear, chances are pretty good it's fibers came from land in California's Central Valley. And by default, you can be sure the Boswell family grew it. The King of California tells the interesting story of how the Boswells became the single largest grower of cotton in the United States.

The King, J.G.Boswell II, died in April 2009 but the empire he and his fore bearers built still allowed his chroniclers to drive the distance from Washington DC to Philadelphia (over 135 miles) without leaving their property. The incredible reporting job done by these authors speaks to the highest traditions of that craft. Their detailed, balanced account of just how Boswell and his family acquired and maintained this vast empire of cotton and other agricultural products ranks with other California water sagas such as the classic "Cadillac Desert: The American West and its Disappearing Water" by Marc Reisner. That the Boswells and their competitors, who often joined in oligarchical goals, were clever, able, and rapacious is only part of a fascinating story. You must admire the effective management they brought to their tasks and almost find yourself applauding their victories until you ponder the immensely adverse consequences.Now that the Pacific King Salmon season has been shut down on the entire California coast for the 2008 and 2009 seasons due to the almost total extinction of their number, citizens of California and the nation may want to ask about how the water allocation which made these barons so rich and politically powerful can be more justly shared with the entire environmental system. Most would agree I think that trading the magnificent salmon harvest for more Pima cotton shirts makes no sense.Surely one could give up some of the products now produced by this mega farmers to save such a precious resource as the King Salomon. This book serves as the ultimate cautionary guide to how we should not go about water allocations in this beautiful state.

About the Author

Paul H. Smith, a retired Army intelligence officer and Operation Desert Storm veteran, spent seven years in the Department of Defense's remote-viewing program, serving as operational remote viewer, theory instructor and trainer, security officer, and unit historian. Smith has a B.A. in Middle Eastern studies from Brigham Young University, and an M.S. in Strategic Intelligence (Middle East emphasis) from the Defense Intelligence College, and is a doctoral candidate in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. He is president of Remote Viewing Instructional Services, Inc., and vice president of the nonprofit International Remote Viewing Association.

Want to go trekking through the most rugged mountains, densest tropical forest, or hippest urban jungle? It's all here. From top quality resorts to hole-in-the-wall hostels, you can be pampered or persecuted. It's up to you. No matter what you choose to do, you'll share all this loveliness with only about 11 million other people, and a good travel guide.A country as diverse as Bolivia deserves a guide as good as this one. Truly excellent, comprehensive travel guides are hard to find, but this is one of them. There are 400 pages here dedicated to this landlocked wonder. The detail itself is awesome, from the depth of the cultural and historical content to the comprehensiveness of the numerous listings. The maps are simple and accurate, and there's enough good color photography and other content to pique your interest. The material I like to call "coaching" material - suggested itineraries, must-see lists, and "if you like" recommendations - are not just filler content, but display a real working knowledge of the country.I've used other guides to plan trips to Bolivia, namely, the Footprint guide, and it is also a good book, but it just can't compare to the richness of this volume. The Lonely Planet guide illustrates a real commitment to Bolivia as a prime destination rather than a pass-through.This book retains a lot of the original spirit of Lonely Planet as a guide for trekkers and outdoorsman, as it features many places in Bolivia that have inspired every human that has set foot on it, from Inca to Spanish to mestizo. Cultural, historical and natural contexts are fantastic, and practical information is easily accessible and honestly useful.The bottom line is that this is the best guide for Bolivia, by a wide margin, for all sorts of travelers. If you find yourself here, by all means, buy this book.

very good guide book for a part of the world that is very difficult to comprehend and follow

Used this book extensively and found it helpful. We did find somea a better salt flat tour than the one recommended. Other tourists were more helpful there.

I have been using Lonely Planet guides for years and have always been very, very happy with them. This guide is no exception. Very useful and easy to use. Packed with great information and tips.
