I really enjoyed reading this book, was reading it after a trip to South Africa so the townships were a bit of a fascination to me. It helped me understand life in these towns, made the people and their lives real, and as a tourist gave me a glimpse of part of SA that is not very accessible to tourists.Well worth reading.

This book offers a perspective and appreciation for the honesty of life. It is well written, taking the reader into the life of a township in South Africa, portraying a tangible existence of trust, friendship, and reality amid daily challenges. A story of post apartheid South Africa that is believable and colorful.Highly recommended.

Completely captivating. A triumph to the idea that we are not born racist as well as the ideology of Ubuntu in action!

Otter, a white, anglophone South African, recounts moving to a black township in Cape Town in response to high rents. It's a great portrait of township life, and it's an incredibly quick read; I finished it in a day. The criticism one could make is that it's a perspective on township life written by someone who, however well he integrated in local life, is still an outsider. As such, he picks up some details that outsiders will pickup that lifelong residents might not, but he also misses a fair amount, I suspect. Taken in combination with some of the accounts of township life written by black writers who grew up there, however, I think it's a nice piece.

Otter tells of his experiences living in Khayelitsha while he was a journalism student and working as an intern for a Cape Town newspaper. He provides vivid insights into the lifestyle, problems, sense of community and camaraderie he found in the primarily Xhosa environment of Khayelitsha (New House). He expresses well his personal growth as a young white man through these new experiences, seeing his South Africa from the "other side" as a contrast to his growing up and family setting in the Eastern Cape. He provides portraits of many residents and deeper descriptions of those he was closest to.Otter includes his experiences of news coverage and writing through which he provided an inside view of life in the township for those in a totally different world only a few kilometers away in the isolated world they experienced, which had been enforced and protected during the Apartheid days.He shares his own sense of growing awareness of his ignorance of the townships and the cultural and financial gap. He comes to see and know the real people who live there, comes to share and enjoy their life, which he prefers in many ways. He comes to regard the outside life he once knew as cold and largely artificial. One of the great characteristics of the African traditional cultures he warmed to in Khayelitsha was the sense of community, sharing, generosity, acceptance and mutual concern within the close-knit community of the crowded township.

This is a well-written, engaging book that speaks intelligently and carefully about race relations and the lived reality of race in Khayelitsha. It is easy to worry about the mis-steps a white male might take when he embarks on a journalistic experiment to live in a black township. Otter quickly eases many readers' concerns as he faces the difficult questions of race and racism directly and honestly. This book gives readers important questions to ponder and also respects its participants.

It's a great insider view of somebody who's experience the country's conflicts. Steven Otter reflects a lot on his own identity and it's just as humorous as it is profound. It's obvious that he's got a great talent in dealing with language - it's so much fun to read his thoughts and experiences.Yet, I have to say - I'm not sure if anybody who's not been to Khayelitsha can really appreciate the book. Although it might very well be a great preparation if you're planning on going there or to any other township in Cape Town area.

RIP Steven Otter
