Another emotional addition to the Porter Brothers Trilogy! This book was a beautiful balance of heartache & happiness. It made me ugly cry, it made me laugh, it pissed me off & it made my heart smile. I simply couldn't put it down. The best thing about this book... The love the Porters have for one another. The bond this family shares is arguably the strongest, most unbreakable one in this entire series. That fact has been demonstrated time & time again in the books through actions, words & of course, the spirits.*****SPOILERS*****As for our main couple in this book, Dustin & Jessie... they were pretty darn cute together. I love that they had a second chance kind of romance going on & that they were playmates when they were little. Couples who have a history like they did, always know how to touch my heart.Dustin... Loved his jealous streak, the way he loved Logan & how he protected his family, even while in the midst his own personal struggle. The attempts to win Jessie over with Logan at the mud hole & when camping, turned into some super fun scenes too. And that whole "bring-church-to-the-Porter's-property" thing... *swoon* My biggest beef with him... the fact that he didn't fight harder for Jessie. At the very least, he should've tried to make contact with her some time during the last three years, when she moved into town & opened her daycare. I just don't get why he was still worried about her brothers at that point in time. And all that Sam crap? He said that Sam would always be second best to Jessie but after reading some of the little notes he left Jessie in their hidey-hole, it didn't always come across that way to me. I mean, dude... Don't profess your love to her AFTER you just said you got someone else pregnant!Jessie... My heart went out to this woman. What she had to go through was horrific. Throughout it all, she remained tough, down-to-earth & was such a caring person. Loved her relationship with her brothers (Holt braiding her hair was beautiful), the way she was with Logan & how hardworking she was. I really wish she would've struck up a friendship with Jo. They're both mountain women, both have gone through trauma, have similar familial situations & tomboy-ish traits. Scenes with them & Rachel would've been golden!More FAVORITES-*Greer- Him as a daddy was a-freakin'-dorable. And him in that bridal shop scene... OMG, he was so sweet & funny!*Ema- Just like her Uncle Greer, this little lady was a SCENE-STEALER! The possessiveness she showed over "Her Dusty" was the cutest thing ever!!*Cole- His appearance at the end of the book was awesome to see. It was only a taste but it sure left me hungry for more. Really hope he gets his own happily ever after in a future Predators book! Some WTF?!!-*Ginny/Genny- Which is it?! She started out as Ginny, so it should stay the same way throughout the series.*Age inconsistencies- I've learned to go with the flow where ages are concerned (because they ALL seem to be drinking from the Fountain of Youth in this series) but I just had to put it out there that there is no way Jessie could only be 18 when she opened the daycare. Pretty sure she's older than Rachel & that she was older than 11 years old when Logan was born... *shrugs**Too many new characters- I love me some new additions to the cast of characters but I almost couldn't keep them straight. I LOVE the new single dads we met through Jessie's daycare but there were one too many single ladies introduced for my liking. (I don't want Gavin with ANY of them, by the way!)So excited to get my hands on the next book in this ongoing saga! Remember that since each book builds off of the last one, Jamie Begley books are best read in order. Be sure to check out the recommended reading order on her website, on Amazon or on goodreads. :)Side Note: How the frak is Kaley still alive?! She was in the church when Beth, Razer & Lily were kidnapped in Shade 2 & stood by when Beth was being whipped. How is she not in jail or at the VERY least been kicked out of Treepoint?!! #ridiculousSide Note #2: I'm still in a very "Screw you, Penni!" mood, after the crap she pulled in Stalked with Greer. It'll take more than Shade's help to get you in my good graces, girl.
I'm sorry but I disliked the book. I would almost say I hated it. Which is extremely surprising as I haven't read a Jamie Begley book that I wouldn't rate 4 stars. This one is a solid two. I have been looking forward to Dustin's book forever and a day. I had.more then an inkling that Jessie was his girl. When I saw the blurb for the book, I was super excited. Unfortunately, the book didn't live up to my expectations.First off, there is a trigger warning; the novel contains the rape of a major character and while it is not graphic it is extremely difficult to process. This may color some of my opinion on the book and I acknowledge that.I hate to say it but for the majority of the book, it only felt like Dustin noticed Jessie again was because of the incident. It caused him to remember how much he liked her as a kid and how he wanted to protect her. Now consider this the major driving force of the novel. The book appears to take place over several weeks maybe a month or two. There appears to be no time or even a description of Jessie healing. Dustin just moves into her life. And keep in mind Jessie is a virgin, has been in love with Dustin her whole life and very shelrered. It makes me feel like Dustin is taking advantage of her even though I know he isn't. And because of the incident, the relationship between the Porter's and Hayes improves drastically.Next, despite all the hype of Dustin and Jesse (in my head), they have little or no chemistry. They're relationship just seems to be there. There was no tension, no angst, and no growth. Finally, the ending, which I won't go into detail about came out of nowhere. I was not expecting it and I won't congratulate the author for surprising me. No. Quite the opposite. This surprise was horrible and came from left field. There was maybe two hints in the entire book that it was coming. The ending (last several chapters) actually caused me to drop my rating from a three to a two.
Awwwwwww.man, this author always gets me to cry. She writes with such realism of emotion. She plucks at my heart strings like they were a banjo being played on the top of Black Mountain. This story was action PACKED. #Kidnapping, #murder, #rape, #amnesia, #MountainFolk #HillPeople #paranormal #paranormalactivity #spirituality #manwhore #virgin #SecondChanceAtLove #TerminalIllness #Porters #Hayes #BloodFued If you are following the series like I am, some favorite characters reappear. The beauty of this is it in no way takes the focus from the main couple or their romance. Every character, scene, or flashback enhances the story. The moments where I get all fired up and find myself writing spitfire notes in my kindle the author visits, revisits, and sets to rights any of the gut wrenching or heart-rending moments in the plot. I love that the author always brings a measure of closure, she doesnt abandon a plot twist or throw things in for filler that never get revisited and just leave a reader hanging. No. These books are perfection in that sense. We always come full circle with Jamie Bagley. Her heart is clearly in her writing and she always impresses me. The heroine in this story is so brave, fun, smart, admirable, she's the type of character I love to read about. Her stubbornness enhances the story and makes her fight for life and love an incredible journey to experience, this is more than just reading a book. IMO. The hero evolves from a young scared boy, who may have seemed somewhat selfish, foolish, careless, only to discover he's much deeper than first glance or read\ revealed...only to discover he keeps the best of himself private, very few people really know him. But then you get to know Dustin and understand why Jessie never stopped loving him and waited. I already look forward to reading this one again.
