Quite by chance I found this book. As I yearn for the space within my life to do something similar, being able to travel along with Heather was very fulfilling. However, it did little do satiate my appetite for this sort of travel. Instead it stoked the embers further and the sound of the clock ticking away is louder than ever. Don't read this book unless you want to read a very well written story that is likely to make you want to go find your own Ubuntu.
A well written tale of a terribly complicated and tortuous journey by a single woman in dangerous surroundings whose faith in humanity is without boundaries. Entertaining, enlightening, touching.
Good read whether your a cyclist or notHeather does a great job of integrating her trials, difficulties, with an indomitable spirit.Great descriptions of the people she meets. In addition, one should read this as an approach to life with all its situations.....both bad and good.
More then just a trip. Well written and informative. Lots of adventure and empathy for others in the world . Seeing Africa through the authors eyes gives you a point of view you may not expect because of the news out of Africa now and twenty years ago. The insightful look at her life and struggles is inspiring. The "gut feelings" are worth paying attention to.
An easily readable chronicle of travel from south to north through Africa. The book highlights some of the challenges and cultural differences that the author - the adventurous and brave Heather Ellis meets and overcomes along the way. The book details travel in the late '90 s and accordingly some of the facts may have changed as the African continent continues to struggle to find its identity.
I was on the motorcycle with Heather Ellis all the way as she determindly rode through Africa. Her passion to meet the people of the land and find out about their lifestyles/difficulties/challenges brought her close to disaster at times, but her strong sense of survival and skill brought her through. If you are into adventure, and that means getting off the tourist trails, then you won't be putting this book down till you've ridden to the end.
How many of us would travel as this author did. A fascinating look at how to travel with no fear and embracing each experience as it unfolds. Another journey lived vicariously. How I would love to have the guts to travel with no inhibition.
"We are all one". Ms Ellis is inspiring with her dedication and endless optimism. She, like other adventure riders, has the feeling that people are basically good, help will arrive when needed and everything will work out for the best. And with that attitude it nearly always will.
