This was great story. Heartbreaking, joyous, and thrilling all in one. Characters are relatable and you can feel for each of them. Loved this story and look forward to reading more from these authors.

I love both of these authors so when I found out they were writing together, well needless to say I was excited! Merritt is a spirited independent FMC who doesn't let anyone push her around. She lived 15 years thinking her father abandoned her and forced her to leave the three boys she loved. Then her father does and she must go home to deal with his affairs and to face the three men she left years ago. A suspense filled love story full of twists and revelations, a definite MUST read!

They always say your significant other is your best friend. But how do you handle it when you have 3? Merritt thinks that after 15 years of no contact with her best friends from childhood will be easy to walk away from. Until she faces them again. Tatum, Denver and Krew have plans and minds of their own. And the clash of these 4 is worth it. Well done contemporary RH that has just the right balance of emotion and one amazing storyline

I didn’t realize this was a book in an anthology, which I don’t usually read but I’m glad I did. The characters are well written. The drama and story line were on point in this story. I’m one for liking longer books but this was an enjoyable quick read! I will recommend this! Love Cora’s writing style!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was straight to the point and captivating. I loved that there were no filler spots and that everything for and made sense. I loved all the characters and how even after time apart, they still got together.

This was a fast great read. Awesome characters and a great storyline. Makes a great afternoon read to enjoy and relax with. Like I said it's just GREAT.

This is a great feel good story. Some suspense and lots of feels make for a great read I recommend to everyone.

I swear everything that our lovely CJ writes is a complete hit. Please just read this book. I know I always say that, but this one is SO dang good. I didn’t want it to end, like ever. Mer and Remy, ugh I love them both so much! I’m in love with the name Snaps too. And the guys, jfc. No words. I can’t even pick a favorite. Gimme ‘em all. This flows so good and sucks you in, totally feels like a movie playing out in your head. Way more than 5 stars.

#15,508 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

That rating might be a little low. It's more for the series as a whole than this particular installment and more to balance out the 3 star ratings I gave to the others. The whole thing probably should have gotten 2.5 stars, but that's not a thing, so here we are. These books are perfectly fine. They move reasonably fast and the writing is serviceable. They suffer from thinly-drawn characters, though. Of the heroic characters, I always had trouble remembering who was who out of Ian, Merrill, and Eli, and Tia, Chelsea, and Nell. Not to mention Sherell, Penny, and Rita. There were a ton of them, and they generally got one trait (Merrill was missing a leg, Tia was gay) to latch on to.The biggest problem, and it's laid bare here as much of the book's length is devoted to it, is the central romance. I found myself comparing it to Katniss and Peeta. I'm not a fan of them either, but the big difference was that I knew Peeta, and I watched their relationship grow from ground zero. Here, the series starts with Zoey and Lee together (paired by the totalitarian compound where both grew up). There's no wrinkle there, no hiccup. Lee wasn't paired with someone else, to give their relationship an element of rebellion. It was just magically there. And they're deeply in love, I guess, despite Zoey pretty much forgetting about him for vast swathes of the series (and if memory serves, the entire 2nd book). Now I'm expected to be incredibly invested in this One True Love. Sorry, book. Not happening. The verdict? If you're a huge fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, maybe give it a shot? Otherwise, don't worry about it.

I felt like I wasn’t going to like it because it was so slow moving in the beginning. This struck me as weird since the ending of the second book leaves you with such a great cliffhanger. There is action at the beginning of the book, but I wasn’t really sucked into the story line until about half way through. I would also say that there were moments of frustration with the lead character because she has a bit of a martyr complex. BUT, the second half of the book is so good, that I ended up loving it! I think that certain parts were a bit predictable, while others were a shock to me..so there was a good balance there. My favorite part was the way the author wrapped everything up. Mainly because I like it when a writer has enough guts to not end the book on a happy note. Especially when it’s a dystopian novel…bad things gonna happen man! Not to say that I wasn’t sad that everyone didn’t get what they wanted in the end… It’s just more realistic. Overall, I very much liked the final book for this trilogy.I would recommend it for people who like dystopian novels or movies. I would also recommend it to people who like a strong female lead.

This was a good trilogy right up to the moment when Zoey's parentage is revealed. Ever since the first book I'd suspected the author was leaning in that direction but I hoped he wouldn't do it, wouldn't go for the obvious, soap-opera-sappiness, but he did. It makes the rest of the story basically useless. Probably planned as a 'gotcha' moment, the reveal of Zoey's parentage merely devolved the story into a facsimile of a thousand more just like it. Too bad. I was really hoping my intuition was wrong, and that the author wouldn't go for the obvious, plot-by-numbers formula, but he did. Might as well put a bow on it and sell it to ABC as an after-school-special (remember those?). Now I have to slog through the rest of the story and reach the ending I already know will happen. We need more authors like Phillip Pullman (The Golden Compass) and Patrick Rothfuss (The Name of the Wind). I'm glad this trilogy was on sale.

This author can write well but with each of these books the characters go through the exact same trials and tribulations with the the only difference being the bad people as the book before. I only gave this book three stars because of this fact - there was nothing new added to the story. Even Zoey heroically going it alone so others wouldn't be hurt because of her is same-o same-o. One thing I found humorous in this book is the author's clear lack of knowledge about how a woman's body works when she has given birth - just as a side note; the female body has to have the appropriate hormones in play within the body, typically from pregnancy and childbirth, to actually be able to produce human breast milk. Breastmilk does not spontaneously form just because you are holding a baby, even if that baby is biologically your own.

Maybe I shouldn't read dystopian tales anymore. Not that they are all alike and the Dominion Trilogy was really good. But the one thing the same in all the ones I have read is the death toll. It's constant and I find it bleak. And while I really enjoyed these books, this one lost a star or two because they (SPOILER ALERT) abandoned the dog. Unforgivable. You expect the deaths of the characters you've come to care for but I can't take it when the victim is an animal. Come on all you authors out there, can't you just save the animals? Although Seamus doesn't die, even worse, they abandon him because "he was wild when Ian found him". The poor thing is grieving for his master so they just leave him at the grave and assume since he was wild before he'll have no problem surviving without him. And they never look back or mention the poor dog again. Really?? Nope, ruined the end of the whole thing for me. That and Zoey is just a little too slick and lucky. Talk about having nine lives - I guess all of the animal luck went to her. So good read with some flaws.

Review

A 2018 Southwest Book of the YearExploring the Superstitions: Trails and Tales of the Southwest's Mystery Mountains by John AnnerinoNonfiction"It's safe to say that Annerino is enamored with the Superstition Mountains, which he finds "treacherous, hauntingly beautiful and deceptively enchanting." Rising slightly over 5,000 feet, the Superstitions are not imposing or majestic by most standards but, when one considers the 654 people who perished in these "Killer Mountains," they may be the darkest and most violent. Intimately familiar with the region, Annerino features only trails that he traversed. In addition to his stunning photography, he includes directions, topographical maps, field notes, and trip reports. To assist readers with planning and preparation, emergency contact information (including Final County Search and Rescue) is listed as well as links to trail maps, lodging, local sights and, for prospectors still searching for the Lost Dutchman's Gold, treasure maps along with a government site noting required permits and regulations. Readers will also find an account of the Mountains' colorful and tragic history, descriptions of native flora and fauna, and, lest we forget, an appendix of those who met their end there. In all, it is a complex guide certain to appeal to beginning and seasoned outdoorsman alike." -- Skyhorse --Vicki Ann Duraine2018 Southwest Books of the Year"Now celebrating its 42nd year of guiding readers to the finest in southwestern literature, Southwest Books of the Year continues to stand alone as the nation's only ongoing inventory of everything that is current and contemporary in the literature of our region."             "Annerino is an excellent photographer and fine writer with a special affinity for the American Southwest and Old Mexico."--DALLAS MORNING NEWSNewest Masterpiece. "I've been reading John Annerino's newest masterpiece: Exploring the Superstitions. It is a wonderfully fresh look at an old, tired subject, but John makes it come alive and gives folks something exciting to read at every turn of the road or dip in the trail. John's research is compelling. Wow! I hope it sells a truckload of books!!" ~Bill Broyles, author of Our Sonoran DesertOde to the Superstitions. "Living in the shadow of the infamous Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix, I've heard many tales of lost gold and lives lost, but until I read John Annerino's arresting new book, 'Exploring The Superstitions~Trails and Tales of the Southwest's Mystery Mountains', I didn't have a clue how much I'd missed. Annerino, a gifted writer-photographer and veteran Southwest adventurer, lovingly reveals it's storied history from both Native American, Mexican miner and frontier settler POV's, describes it's legacy as the most dangerous mountain range in the world (650+ victims), while teasing us with treasure maps and genuine stories of real gold discovered within the Superstitions. And then he caps it off with detailed trail hikes, climbing routes, water sources, and essential information to keep you from adding your name to the Superstition death list. Far more than a trail guide, this is a book to inform and inspire you to follow in the Dutchman's footsteps. After all, someone has to find the Cave of the Gold Bars, don't they? (Note, I'm not paid for this review, it's simply my thank you for John Annerino's lifetime contribution to Southwestern lore)."--Review by Kerrick JamesA 2018 Southwest Book of the Year

Exploring the Superstitions ("Exploring") is a special book. It crosses disciplines and weaves together many dimensions of this confounding part of central Arizona. It moves through historical insights and provides solid trail suggestions for hikers. I liked that it strayed from the genre and explained the often overlooked history of indigenous peoples here. The author treats the subject matter with the sensitivity for which he is known and goes beyond stereotypes. The book is also animated by gifted photography. And while the research here distinguishes it from other books on the shelf, it also is a fine guide for exploring the rough terrain of this area.Certainly if you want to find your way beyond Weavers Needle or hike east from Charlebois Springs, this is the book for you. If, instead, you seek an up-to-date take on the history of Peralta or the back-stories of early explorers and those who never returned, Exploring the Superstitions won’t disappoint. It breaks new ground for books of this locale and brings new info--even for Arizona history buffs. A comprehensive publication, this book was worth the wait. Five stars!

a "salad bar" of a book. that is to say, it is travelogue, history, wildlife descriptions (flora & fauna), and some good recommendations on some trails to traverse. too often books on southwestern travel start with the colonial period, the Spanish and gringo invasions. this book offers a substantial amount of history of the indigenous cultures that were the original human occupants. annerino is a good author to consult for travel in the southwest, especially his home state of Arizona. and the superstitions have such an allure with all the deaths and attempts to find the lost Dutchman mine, if indeed it ever xisted? now we have a new treasure to pursue, some undestroyed (maybe?) pieces of artwork done by Arizona painter ted degrazia…...

Lots of facts and history but considering this person calls himself a photographer there are very few photographs in there. If you are going to do put that much detail into trails post a photo of the trail/scenary.

Excellent book.

Great book

John Annerino has done it again! In "Exploring the Superstitions: Trails and Tales of the Southwest’s Mystery Mountains," he once again gives us all the advice and information one might expect from an excellent trail guide, and so much more. Annerino complements all the standard fare with anecdotes from his own substantial experience, and well as obviously exhaustive research in the areas of geology, anthropology, history, botany, biology and so much more. But if all this makes the book sound like an unwieldy tome, it is not. The author has expertly woven the information together in a highly readable way – like the “zarape” mentioned on p. 60, it will comfortably cover the reader/adventurer’s needs and satisfy his or her thirst for knowledge (but don’t forget to bring your own water!) with the added bonus of being decorated with Annerino’s always-stunning photography.

The Superstition Mountains are among the most legendary and well-known places in Arizona. Whether or not the fabled Lost Dutchman Gold Mine actually exists in this vast roadless wilderness, there is treasure in the form of natural beauty strewn everywhere you look, especially in the spring wildflower season. My family has been exploring this amazing place on foot and horseback since my grandfather was a young man.John Annerino's new book, which I have just read, is by far the best guide I've seen to this jewel of the desert. Hikers and horseback riders will find detailed directions in this book for the surprisingly numerous trails that crisscross this great wilderness, including critically important information about where to look for water. There's also plenty of information about the local flora and fauna, the Native peoples of the area, and the history of the white man's obsessive, risky search for mythical hidden treasure in these mountains from the colonial era of New Spain until the present day. I was not aware that there have been so many discoveries in recent decades of old diggings and artifacts that have raised hopes for someday locating the Dutchman's mine, but Annerino includes numerous up-to-date details. The book is well written and well illustrated; photojournalist Annerino takes both the "photo" and "journalist" aspects of his craft seriously. There's a good guide to maps, gear, and local resources like government agencies and lodging. One interesting, though macabre, section enumerates the stories of the many explorers who have met their deaths in the Superstitions, along the lines of the classic "Death in the Grand Canyon".If you are a resident of Arizona, or a temporary visitor, and you enjoy being immersed in the history of the Wild West or the wonders of nature, you will find this book to your liking. Highly recommended.

I have never been to the Southwest, but John Annerino's books bring this special, sacred and mysterious place to life. His historical research of facts, stories and photographs illuminate the majesty and splendor of this unique land. Trails and Tales of the Southwest's Mystery Mountains; Exploring the Superstitions, continues Annerino's series of highly personal, informative and poignant books illustrated with his own photographs that simmer with golden light and historical images that tell the story of the land and the people who have lived and explored this amazing place.

Essential Car Care for Women, by Jamie Little Danielle McCormick

Review

"Essential Car Care for Women is a great tool to have as it explains virtually everything the everyday driver might come across on the road. It's a must-have addition to your emergency car care kit."—Danica Patrick, IndyCar Series winner and NASCAR driver"Explanations of automobile systems are concise and clear. The emphasis is on the important bits—what owners should do to keep their vehicle in good condition and when to turn it over to a professional. Emergency fixes and how to buy a new or used car round out this nifty manual. VERDICT This is a good update for Julie Sussman & Stephanie Glakas-Tenet’s Dare To Repair Your Car. As it lacks an overwhelming amount of mechanical instruction, this book proves useful and approachable. It will appeal to high school to adult audiences, male or female, though guys may be leery of the pink cover. Very strongly recommended."—Library Journal, starred review

When I sent this to my daughter at her college, her three roommates (all car owners) initially derided it as sexist, "a car book for us stupid girls who know nothing about mechanical stuff...right!"Later than evening, as my daughter was reading it in their common room she noted out-loud some points about automobiles about which she was unaware. Soon the other three were over her shoulder reading the notes and looking at the diagrams. Two of them ordered it from Amazon that night. A few days later, a guy friend of my daughter--who is quite knowledgeable about autos--kidded her about it when he saw it in the car. She recited a few facts from the book that he didn't know. He asked if he could borrow it--just "to look".Bottom line: this is an intelligent book for women who need to know about automobiles but are not particularly interested in doing the intricate repairs or upgrades themselves, just the basic care. But it describes all the processes well so they can make good decisions when discussing issues with a mechanic or car repair center. Highly recommended.

This book is well-written, informative, and has plenty of pictures and illustrations to help explain things. I only wish it was a little longer or maybe had a more detailed follow-up book. It covers a lot for an introduction, but I do wish it had a list of things to check before a road trip. There was also a little too much pink for me and I felt as though the amount of jewelry on the women while they were caring for their cars was unsafe.

I got this book for my daughter, who is clueless when she goes to a mechanic and sometimes gets taken advantage of I suspect. Frankly, I'm a little turned-off by the title of the book, as it seems sexist. Car care is car care...for men or women. Do women get electric cars and men get gasoline cars or something?Looking through the book myself though, it's good information for, well, anyone :)

At first I thought it was a little sexist to have a car book 'for women' but realized it's just a great intro to car engines, transmissions, brakes, etc., that doesn't assume the reader knows any jargon to begin with. (Okay there is a lot of pink and purple in the graphics -- which apart from that are excellent!) Most women just didn't spend their childhood hanging out with dad in the garage. This book is really all you need to understand how cars work; definitely enough to ask your mechanic good questions until you understand what he's telling you.

Good for an overview of many topics but I expected more detail.

Was a bit too basic, even for the ladies. IMHO

Very informative book, it could use more in depth information in some sections.

Written in simple language with clear, helpful diagrams, this is a must have book for any car owner, male or female.

Who Was Maria Tallchief?Who Was Maria Tallchief?Who Was Maria Tallchief?Maria Tallchief was a ballerina, but she was not just another toe-dancer. She was America’s first prima ballerina. A prima ballerina is the star of the show, the very best dancer on the stage. Maria danced for kings and queens and presidents. She thrilled her audiences with amazing leaps and arabesques. Her performances as a swan queen, a sugar plum fairy, and a magical firebird stand out as some of the most beautiful chapters in American ballet history. She was a Native American, the daughter of a full-blooded Osage. Maria’s story begins on the Osage reservation in the rolling hills of northeastern Oklahoma. As a child, the beat of the tom-toms excited her. The rhythm of the drums filled the hollow of her bones. The songs of her people’s past woke within her a love of dance and the prima ballerina she would one day become.Chapter 1 The Osage ReservationMaria opened her eyes. She had fallen asleep in the living room, and now her father was carrying her upstairs. She snuggled closer against his warm body and stared at his shiny black hair. His dark eyes smiled down at Maria.Maria’s first memory was that tender moment, waking to find herself safe in her father’s arms. She was three years old, and her father seemed like a giant to her. Alexander Joseph Tall Chief was six feet two inches. He had broad shoulders and a swaggering confidence that had won the heart of Ruth Porter, a farm girl from Kansas. He was Osage. She was Scottish and Irish. They were married soon after meeting in the small town of Fairfax, Oklahoma.Maria came into the world on a cold winter day, January 24, 1925. Her parents named her Betty Marie, after her two grandmothers, Elizabeth, “Eliza,” Tall Chief and Marie Porter. Maria had an older brother named Jerry. When Maria was almost two years old, her sister Marjorie was born. The Tall Chief family lived in a ten-room, red-brick house on a hill overlooking the Osage reservation. The Osage hills were a magical place for Maria. The prairie grasses bowed their heads and whispered in the wind. Wildflowers bloomed goldenrod yellow and daisy white. Butterflies and the songs of meadowlarks filled the air. In summer, Maria hunted through the high grasses for arrowheads. The sharp tips of stone were bits of Osage history. Whenever she found one, she said, shivers raced up her spine. The Osage had lived on the plains of North America for many hundreds of years. Before the white settlers came, the prairie was a sea of grasses so tall that an Osage hunter had to stand on the back of his pony to see what lay beyond. The brown clouds and thunder in the distance were herds of buffalo. The Osage called these bearded animals “brothers.”The white settlers, whom the Osage called “Heavy Eyebrows,” changed the land and the lives of the native people forever. Heavy Eyebrows plowed under the sweet-smelling grasses to farm the land. They slaughtered and skinned the buffalo, sending the woolly hides back East on the railroads that they had built across the plains. In some places along the iron rails, mounds of buffalo bones rose almost as high as the ancient prairie grasses. The government of the white settlers forced the Osage onto reservations, first in the country Heavy Eyebrows called Kansas, then to a new place called Oklahoma. The Osage were hunters and gatherers. Without the buffalo, they could not hunt. Heavy Eyebrows wanted the Osage to become farmers. Year after year they scratched a living from the baked-red soil, but the crops they grew were not enough. The Osage were a proud people. Now they were starving. They had no choice but to accept the handouts of food and supplies from the white government agents.

Although I purchased this book for my children, I could not put it down.I had never hear Maria Tallchief's story. We get a very balanced view of her life. It tells of the hardships she endured without overemphasizing them. It is a very honest book and does not hide what some might find to be the uncomfortable events of her life.Yet, while the authors include hardships, they focus on her successes and how the various choices and people in her life had a part in helping her succeed. Her father was an alcoholic, but they portray him as a whole person. Her mother was very driven in her desire to see her daughters succeed, but the reader still has compassion for her.I love how Maria remained friends with Balanchine after their divorce.I admire how she did not let prejudice stop her from trying to build a bridge between the two cultures in which she lived.Due to some of the content, you may want to read the book to your younger children. This way you can discuss some of the difficult events together. But there is no way the information is written in a rough or gratuitous manner. I highly recommend this book.

This series of biographies is terrific. They are styled like graphic novels, but loaded with detail.Confession: I didn't know who Maria Tallchief was until my daughter read this book for a third grade book report. Not only was she America's first prima ballerina, but she was also Native American. It was quite an inspiring story for any little girl. The story follows her life through modern day. She still teaches dance.Any young person between third and sixth grade would enjoy it, little girls in particular.

Informative

Well written and most interesting, I bought it for my grandsons who live in Osage County.

This is a good biography series for early chapter book readers. There are a lot of picture books that are biographies and there are a lot of chapter books, but this is one of the few in-between series.

This book was pefect for my fifth grader. It was AR approved, age appropriate and had presented the information in a manner that kept my reader interested in the story.

Educational

Very informative book on Maria Tallchief. I think there is more information that could have been put in here but nonetheless it was short, informative and easy to read.

Review

'What a pleasure to see this wonderful book in publication. It addresses a real need teachers have: how to make sure these important ideas about vocabulary instruction can be put into action. Greek and Latin Roots: Keys to Building Vocabulary is also research based, which is a real necessity for everything we do in the classroom. And, it's just a delight to read! The humor (from the capter titles like 'A Root Awakening'), games, and other motivating strategies will captivate both teachers and students alike. Bravi! This book is a reasonable place to start for teachers who wish to improve their students' vocabulary acquisition and spelling. It carries numerous suggestions for classroom activities.I found the prefixes, suffixes, and roots in the Appendix somewhat hard to understand (and I had three years of Latin in high school) and thus implement. I had to use a dictionary to get the precise root of particular English example words. Also, putting the Latin or Greek roots into crossword puzzles or flashcards (or other activities) requires the teacher to take another step in implementing this Latin-and-Greek root-word program. Thus, teachers should know that they will have to spend 10 to 20 hours on the implementation phase of a vocabulary-and-spelling project. For this reason, I took 2 *'s off. I think at least one good example of each implementation would have been useful.

This is NOT a workbook. It’s a reference book for someone who is either teaching Latin, or perhaps a college student. I had to return. Easy process. No issues. Just not what I was expecting.

Approachable, accessible, and full of strategies and activities to implement into your instruction. I chose this text from a provided list of options as an assignment for my graduate work because it was applicable to concepts we were already covering, and I am so glad I did. My teaching is so much better in the area of root words and word parts, as well as many other areas, because I am more knowledgeable in this area. Rasinski is clear and concise, and successfully makes the book's content easy and even desirable to read. A must have for educators of students grades four and up!

If you are practicing for ACT or teaching younger kids about words....THIS is the book for you. If you know the information in this little book, you are going to know TONS of words and figure out the ones you don't know. Well done!

Wordy, not as many simple ideas as I had hoped, but in general a useful tool

My students love exploring Greek and Latin roots!

This book went with a class I took at The University of Akron. It changed my understanding about our English language. Did you know that about 90% of multi-syllabic words are based on Latin roots and the other 10% are based on Greek roots? We must teach Morphology to our students!!

perfect for curriculum development not a workable book for classroom instruction

You don't have to be a PhD to understand what's spelled out so well in this pocket size book, you only have to have the courage to follow its inherent message and be well on your way to being healthy again. --RazelThis book is fabulous and every one should not only read it but carry it with them when they shop. --Chelsea Thompson

About the Author

The study of nutrition has been a passion for Dr. Christine Farlow since 1975. Before she ever earned the title of doctor, people were coming to her unsolicited and asking for nutritional advice. It just seemed natural that the next step would be to become a doctor and make it her business to counsel patients in nutrition. Dr. Farlow is a Doctor of Chiropractic with a specialty in Nutrition. She has been counseling patients in Nutrition and teaching Nutrition classes since 1984. Her books evolved out of her teaching and her nutritional counseling. These were the tools she found that people needed most to get started toward eating healthfully and to make healthy eating a lifetime habit.

This little book packs a little punch - and more importantly, doesn't pull too many regarding Genetically Modified Foods. But I agree with the one and three star reviewers that we need something a bit more up to date; and I would add, something more in-depth. For instance, much has changed since 2007 and there are now plenty of conclusive studies showing the toxins and dangers of eating GM foods, which isn't mentioned in this book. Hopefully, if there is another edition the author will include more specific health dangers directly associated with GMO's. GM corn for instance has been found to have male sterility properties (and fertility rates have indeed suffered dramatically since the introduction of GM foods). The author states it is estimated that about 70% all US commercially grown corn is GM. That was in 2007. That number has grown to nearly 100% in 2012. The author's short list of GM foods also needs to be expanded to include, among others, more information on farmed raised salmon, GE hormone rBGH/rBST injected into cows that are also fed GM grains and hay, and the most recent genetic modification in the midst of winning full Congressional approval is genetically modified salmon that reach monstrous sizes in extremely short growing periods. This is thought to be the precursor to genetically modified farm animals - all intended to increase production and profit at great cost to the health of the consumer.A daunting task by any measure, the author has classified over 1000 commonly used food additives according to safety, whether they may cause allergic reactions, and if they are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA. But contrary to popular belief, the FDA is not our friend. To use the FDA guidelines in determining what is safe and what is toxic is as risky as nourishing yourself according to the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance). An unfortunate follower of such guidelines will more often than not face unnecessary suffering and untimely death through disease and malnourishment. Another shortcoming of this book is it only shows carcinogenic (cancer) dangers associated with substances based solely on IARC (the International Agency for Research on Cancer). This is a start, but there are many other well-founded and accepted studies showing great danger and toxicity in MANY of the additives for which the IARC has given a free pass. No additional studies or recommendations are included in this book.I purchased 5 of these books to give as gifts to my grown sons. It was probably a waste of money as this really isn't much of a shopping guide as some of the reviews have stated. It's a good start - and the list is impressively extensive - but there is much more information known on the toxic side effects of many of these chemicals that has been largely ignored here. A plus for this book is that it includes the labeling guide for fresh produce. Just about every piece of fruit has a little PLU (product look-up) sticker on it: 4 digits is conventionally grown; 5 digits starting with an 8 is Genetically Modified; and 5 digits starting with a 9 is organic. I once read a little rhyme that helped me remember this: "4 is a bore, 8 I hate, 9 is mine!" The author's warning to pay attention to theses stickers is good advice, as she points out food can get moved around or mis-advertised. (E.G. Signage advertised as organic when in fact the sticker might say otherwise.)I forgot to mention I purchased a copy of this little book for myself that I use for quick reference; but that is all it is - a quick reference and a jumping-off point at a nice price. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find anything better on the market today. While this book can serve as a handy little starting point, for more information (especially if you are suffering from disease, or raising children, or just interested in optimizing your health and preventing disease down the road) I recommend checking out Gary Null's books and videos and subscribing to Dr. Mercola's twice weekly emails. Although I am not a big fan of all the Mercola products or some outside products that he also endorses on his site, his team of researchers are top notch and his extensive library of articles is worth researching. There are many great resources out there for an over-all education on healthy eating. Pick up the "freebies" - those free health publications usually available at your local health food Store. My favorite periodical is "Well Being Journal". it's not free, and it's not a slick, full color, magazine, but it will definitely keep you up to date on the latest and greatest in the healthy-living world. Here's the 'skinny'('what I've learned in 30 years of research')- avoid all prepared foods, along with sugar, excessive use of salt (use Himalayan or Celtic if you can), and eat only freshly prepared, organic meals, and you won't really need this book much. Avoiding foods cooked or baked at high temperatures and drinking only clean spring or well water, or reverse osmosis filtered water that has been fortified with some minerals, is the icing on the cake. If you're really committed you might even consider researching raw foods (full throttle or modified) as a way to go. Find your own path; no one has all the answers that will work for everyone. Educate yourself constantly on the ever-unfolding information available to us and try not to depend on just one book. But where "additives" are concerned, if you want to start somewhere, until something better comes along, I guess here is as good as anywhere.

For starters, when I use this book as a reference, 100% of the "All-natural", 'Organic' foods that claim "NO MSG" did in fact have it! It is my understanding that according to the FDA, if a food product contains 98% of MSG or less, they can claim that it has 'NO MSG'. There are many sources to find out the many forms of it, and this book lists those that I've found. And why it can occur naturally through various processing methods, it is what it is. Absolutely amazing. The guide fits in a back pocket or purse and is an invaluable resource. I would even suggest having one in your kitchen and a second copy in your car (or scooter). I'm sure some other source SOMEWHERE has similar information, but I haven't found a resource that cross references itself in a basic format, with terse language (exactly what you need when shopping). The sad part about this though is that I ONLY purchase 'whole', 'organic', 'healthier' snacks, and ALL the chips and cookies fail her additives test, quite poorly actually. Lesson learned: If I want high-quality goodies without fillers, seems like I'm gonna have to make 'em myself!!!

Although my edition is the original one, I highly recommend this little book. Anyone who takes the responsibility of buying food for him/herself and/or others should have this book as a guide. It gives the bottom line of what many of the common chemicals that are used in the processing of our foods do to our bodies. You don't have to be a phD to understand what's spelled out so well in this pocket size book, you only have to have the courage to follow its inherent message and be well on your way to being healthy again.

Had I known about this book earlier, I would have made more responsible choices. In reality, I've switched to organic food and I chosen several alternatives that are much better for me. I refer to this book and share my findings with my friends and family. The book is easy to understand and the author has codes to determine what is generally recognized as safe, and additives with an X signifies that it is unsafe. Makes you wonder who is paying off the FDA. I'm just sayin'.

This little book is packed with helpful information. It guides, educates, and gives you the heads up when it comes to shopping. I keep a copy in my glove box in my car to grab when I go to the grocery store. I think that everyone who eats, needs to know the dangers of food additives--they're in virtually everything we eat! This little book will help you assess the risks and make informed decisions on your purchases.

I handed this over to my daughter-in-law. We look at our grandson and then decided to "educate" her. She is still shocked over the crap no the poisons that are in everything including vitamins. If people would simply grow their own or FIND a farmer to grow REAL food for you then they the entity that is poisoning us will go out of business.Make bakery with millet and flax seed (whole and ground) this bread is life. Dump the white stuff and the raped wheat stuff. As a base I use chappati flour as my base. I put coconut flour, oat, then I cook with coconut oil.Don't eat it, don't buy it, don't encourage them. Do it yourself or find a farmer.I would wash my vegetables with baking soda to ensure that Fukushima dropping as washed off your veggies especially if they are from the west coast. Heads up.enenews.com

This is a practical handbook for the layperson and as well, the health professional to use while shopping and teaching others factual data of what is in the food items they are purchasing. This book has a simple approach and easy to carry size making it a good choice. The alert to the label designation of genetically modified '8' on fresh produce is a valuable community service. Thank you Christine for the tip on 'salted fish' being a carcinogen. This is entirely true! The fish lie is exposed in my ebook 'There's Fishy Business Going On' for the public review. Thank you Christine for your public service, I do recommend this useful book for others.
